Paul Gian, the creator of Pungwenism, is a lifelong learner who transformed personal challenges into a philosophy focused on clear and ethical living. With a background in mechanical engineering, he worked in government research before trying his hand at several entrepreneurial ventures, experiencing both setbacks and successes along the way.
Determined to make a difference, he left his government job to start his own businesses. One was an online travel portal that faced legal issues. Another was a music platform that struggled to compete after YouTube entered the scene. Both ventures eventually failed, leading to financial difficulties.
Throughout it all, his then-girlfriend, now his wife, stood by him without wavering. After a decade of challenges and growth, Paul reached financial independence by the age of 40.
The pandemic marked a turning point for him. It encouraged him to focus on health, family, and finding deeper meaning instead of chasing traditional definitions of success. This change inspired him to create The Ethos of Knowledge – Pungwenism, a life philosophy grounded in curiosity, responsibility, and clarity.

The Full Story Behind Pungwenism
Humble Beginnings and the Seeds of Wonder:
Paul grew up in a modest household with income below the national average. Traditional beliefs, many tied to the supernatural, were strongly embraced by his family. Even so, Paul never felt content to accept these beliefs without question. He was driven by a strong curiosity to explore and make sense of the world. This quiet tension sparked the beginnings of a lifelong quest for clarity, understanding, and thoughtful living.
Education and Early Career:
Like many young people unsure about their future, Paul wanted a general degree that would open doors to a variety of jobs. He chose Mechanical Engineering because it was practical and based on science. He later joined a government research agency in Singapore. Although the job was stable and respected, bureaucracy and limited growth made him realize he was caught in a relentless rat race he refused to live.
Entrepreneurship and Failures:
While still employed full-time, Paul co-founded an online travel portal. Despite enthusiasm, the venture faced operational challenges, financial losses, and legal troubles. Undeterred, Paul left his government job to pursue his passion by creating a niche music platform. Just as it gained momentum, YouTube’s rise disrupted the landscape, and the business collapsed.
“The world doesn’t always reward effort, but it always teaches.”
Hard Years and Relationship Strength:
Financial hardship left Paul without a steady income. Throughout this challenging period, his girlfriend (now wife) remained steadfast, loving, and supportive. Her unwavering belief in him became a vital source of strength that helped shape Pungwenism.
Learning from a Startup Mentor:
With no other options, Paul returned to work at a fast-paced internet startup led by a successful entrepreneur. He saw the experience as a chance to learn and grow. The startup eventually closed down, and Paul was laid off. Still, he walked away with valuable lessons that shaped his future.
Persistence Pays Off:
Even after multiple setbacks, Paul persevered. He experimented with different online business ideas, some quietly failing, others showing promise. Slowly, through trial, error, and lessons learned from both his mistakes and others’ successes, one business finally took off.
By age 40, after over a decade of building, breaking, and rebuilding, Paul achieved financial independence.
💡 Success came not from genius, but from grit.
A Wake-Up Call:
The COVID-19 pandemic was both a global and personal reset. Lockdowns and worries about his family’s health pushed Paul to take a hard look at what really matters. He asked himself, what is the point of success if it costs your health or time with those you love?
At that point, Paul realized he had reached his limit. He had enough money, enough stress, and enough of the endless pursuit. At 40, he chose to retire not to escape but to take back control and live life on his own terms. This decision sparked a profound change in his philosophy and outlook.
Birth of Pungwenism:
Drawing on years of experience, Paul created Pungwenism as a thoughtful framework for living with purpose, integrity, and clarity. It is not a religion or a strict ideology, but a practical guide for everyday life. It grew from setbacks, was shaped by careful observation, and is grounded in love.
Central to Paul’s journey is his family. His spouse’s unwavering support gave him the courage to explore ideas openly and without fear. Their love created a safe space to ask difficult questions and challenge old assumptions.
His children, full of boundless curiosity and wonder, posed honest questions demanding answers beyond clichés. Answering these became a moral imperative.
A Life Now Lived by Choice, Not Chase:
Today, Paul lives with simplicity and purpose. He no longer chases status or financial success. Instead, he focuses on health, family, reflection, and peace.
He doesn’t claim to have all the answers, but he has discovered how to ask the right questions. To him, that makes all the difference.
Paul continues to learn, reflect, and grow, but never at the cost of his joy or well-being.
